Chapter 1284: Investigation
They could no longer remain in Yangzhou; it had become nothing more than a jest.
After liquidating all their assets, the entire family relocated to Changshu. There, they purchased over 1,000 mu of fertile land, erected a moderately-sized home, and assumed the mantle of rural landlords.
While they could lead a comfortable existence, it still paled in comparison to the modest country folk. However, for Zhao Mu and the Zhao Family, the transition from being the wealthiest residents of the renowned Jiangnan city to the most affluent figures in the countryside was a significant transformation, known only to them.
The Zhao Family maintained a discreet departure from Yangzhou, yet news of their move reached Zhao Shu’s ears.
Zhao Shu awaited them approximately 20 miles outside the city limits.
The Zhao Family’s countenances shifted as they were intercepted.
Ms. Qin seethed with anger and sorrow. She had been left with nothing, as all her son’s wealth had been stripped away by Zhao Shu!
Even her standing before the Old Master had been reduced. She now wore plain attire, devoid of the splendid ornaments that once adorned her tresses. Two unadorned silver hairpins were the only remnants of her former finery.
Her makeup had lost its former elegance, and her complexion appeared lackluster and ashen.
She appeared to have aged a decade in an instant.
Though her heart brimmed with sadness and fury, she dared not voice her grievances openly. The Old Master berated her, contending that if she hadn’t borne two sons, she would have been expelled!
This filled her with profound sadness.
She had never anticipated that, after only a few years of opulence, she would be relegated to obscurity.
Upon sighting Zhao Shu, she let out a sharp cry. “What brings you here?”
Zhao Mu’s eyes gleamed. “You…”
Zhao Shu grinned. “Old Master Zhao, do not misconstrue my intentions. I am not here to bid you farewell. I have a query, and I’ve come to witness the spectacle.”
Zhao Mu’s expression hardened, his anger palpable.
Zhao Zhai, Zhao Ye, and Ms. Qin seethed with rage.
Zhao Ye possessed sharp wit, but Zhao Zhai merely shot a withering glare at Zhao Shu, refraining from rebuke—an unexpected response that puzzled Zhao Shu.
Internally, he sneered, seeing this man as more moneyed coward than a fiery-tempered individual. With the Zhao Family’s defeat, they were powerless to counter.
Contempt surged within Zhao Shu. The prospects of a Zhao Family resurgence, with these two brothers at the helm, appeared bleak.
Approaching Ms. Qin’s humble wagon, Zhao Shu lifted the curtain and coldly inquired of Dao Seeking, “Did my mother truly meet her end in an accident?”
Ms. Qin’s countenance shifted. “How is that any concern of mine?”
A sneer curled on Zhao Shu’s lips. “Certain matters resist scrutiny. The more one ponders, the more they appear suspicious. It’s in your best interest to steer clear. I won’t forgive any interference. I’ll investigate this thoroughly, no matter the cost!”
Ms. Qin quivered inwardly, her hands growing cold. Yet, she steeled herself, standing tall and turning her head away.
With a final sneer, Zhao Shu departed without a backward glance at the Zhao Family.
Zhao Mu cast a fleeting glance at Ms. Qin’s wagon and remained silent.
Zhao Zhai and Zhao Ye also overheard Zhao Shu’s words. Zhao Zhai cursed under his breath, deeming Zhao Shu’s suspicions excessive. How could his mother muster the audacity for such a deed?
Meanwhile, Zhao Ye harbored deep concerns.
