Chapter 97: Destruction (1)

Chapter 97: Destruction (1)

While the group was walking, they didn’t find many goblins along the way. However, they didn’t drop their guard because the airport was relatively close to the western and southern exits. So, eventually, many goblins would show up…

Although they didn’t have to, Luke’s parents were ready to help if the necessity arose. Mark had a twin ax that seemed pretty big, and Julia had a magic wand. That being said, their skills didn’t match well with their weapons… Mark had one that increased his endurance and Julia one that made the ground around her tremble. Still, the wand granted her the power to fire Wind Blades and those cut the throats of the goblins when she had to use them.

“Are your parents okay?” Mark asked. “I heard a few things from Billy, like the fact that Luke left you guys without asking for help to rescue his family.”

“Yes, they are…” Amanda said while forcing a smile. “Well, Luke helped us a lot, and several things happened, so splitting up was unavoidable.”

“I feel like I shouldn’t pry, but since he is my son, I have the duty to inquire further,” Mark said.

The atmosphere got complicated after that, no one knew what to say and thanks to it, Mark and Julia got worried. Luke didn’t want to hurry his mother, but his father probably would understand what happened… Still, telling what happened with their mouths was hard.

“Because of me, your son had to kill some troublesome individuals,” Luthi said. “I don’t regret what I did because I was trying to protect the group, but I am ashamed for the fact that I didn’t find a better solution.”

“You made Luke do what?” Julia asked.

“… You should explain things with more detail, or we might jump to conclusions,” Mark said.

Luke sighed while Luthi explained what had happened. He had already forgotten about the incident after all. There was no need to get depressed over it… some guys tried to capture him, and Luke resisted. A fight broke out, and Luke fought for his life and ended up killing five people.

“Luke, are you all right… I know that you tend to show a strong front, but you are a good boy,” Julia said.

“Calling someone eighteen a boy is a bit…” Luke said while forcing a smile. “You don’t have to worry, mom… I know that I shouldn’t have done that, but that certainly isn’t making me lose sleep at night. I am completely fine.”

While that was good, the fact that he seemed unconcerned about what Happened was also troubling for his mother. As for Mark, he could see things from a soldier’s perspective. Luke didn’t seem unstable in any way, and considering that he ended up helping some people when he had the chance, he still knew how valuable a human life now is when almost the entire population of the world had turned into zombies or were killed by monsters.

As much as she wanted to confirm that her son was fine, Julia had to stop because the number of encounters around the area of the airport had increased… Until now, while they were walking, Luke managed to stop most of the monsters with Spark Balls while the others used their long-ranged attacks to finish them off, but that was starting to get difficult.

Eventually, the group reached the walls of the airport, but then Billy wondered what they should do. By splitting up, they could cover more ground and save time, but that would make the survivors they just rescued uneasily. Mark immediately realized what Billy was thinking and nodded.

“Luke, I heard that you managed to escape Miami by defeating a horde of zombies, and you also helped Billy’s fame do the same,” Mark said.

“I wasn’t alone, though… What is your point?” Luke frowned.

“You may not be the highest level of the group, but you certainly have more experience than anyone, so we should split the work here,” Mark declared. “The soldiers will secure the area around the airport, and you will stay with us. We can offer some support if something happens, so it should be fine.”

Luke looked toward the people they had just rescued. They sure didn’t want to be put in the hands of an eighteen-year-old kid. Luke also didn’t want to be put on guard duty. He could be a lot more effective on the very frontlines, but he would have more peace of mind if he stayed with his parents.

“I guess it is fine, then…” Luke said and then used Flying Kick in the walls in front of them.

Mark and Billy nodded when they saw that. The soldiers also understood why Luke did that, but the others didn’t. The reason was simple, while the walls were relatively tall, goblins naturally could jump over them, but once they find a hole, they will use it since they will think their targets are close to it. It was a simple strategy to make enemies come from a single direction…

“I really trained you well,” Mark said while nodding to himself.

Luke decided to ignore that and proceeded to hunt the zombies scattered around the airport. Once that was done, the soldiers split up in the area to secure the perimeter. Chloe and Billy went with them since it would be better to have three ranged fighters in Luke’s group instead of three melee ones.

“What else can you do, Luke?” Mark asked.

At that point in time, Luke realized that his father wanted to make Luke use his skills and then make the survivors less worried about the situation. That was a pain… his skills weren’t supposed to be shown like that. Besides, only a fool would show everything he could do in front of a crowd… Well, Luke had been using his skills without holding back, so only Weapon Augmentation was a secret from others, to some extent. Nevertheless, soon they realized that Luke wouldn’t have to show his skills for nothing… a group of goblins began to cross the hole in the wall, and there was one, in particular, that was bigger than the others… the goblin champion.
